HEBREWS 4:14-16 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

GRACE- EMPOWERS ME TO MANAGE MY OWN MESS

IT'S COMPLICATED I

I JOHN 4:7-19 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us.

LOVE IS A CHOICE

CHOICE IS AN EXERCISE IN POWER

POWERFUL PEOPLE PRACTICE ON PURPOSE

POWERFUL PEOPLE CHOOSE TO LOVE NO MATTER WHAT

“Choosing empowers us. Powerful people take responsibility for their lives and choices.  Powerful people choose who they are going to be with, what they want in life and how they are going to accomplish it.” Danny Silk ‘Keep Your Love On’

BIG IDEA: CHOICE

A POWERFUL PERSON ISN’T POWERFUL BECAUSE THEY CONTROL OTHERS. THE ARE POWERFUL BECAUSE THEY CHOOSE TO CONTROL THEMSELVES.

        GRACE - EMPOWERS

JOHN 7:38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

POWERFUL PEOPLE ARE NOT CONTAMINATED BECAUSE THEY ARE A CONSTANT OUTFLOW OF POWER LOVE AND SELF-CONTROL

POWERFUL PEOPLE HAVE A MISSION AND VISION FOR THEIR LIFE

POWERFUL PEOPLE ARE COMFORTABLE IN THEIR OWN SKIN

POWERFUL PEOPLE SAY

    I WILL - I DO - I AM

POWERLESS PEOPLE SAY

    I CAN’T - I HAVE TO - I’LL TRY

LACK OF POWER LOVE AND SELF-CONTROL LEADS US INTO FEAR

I JOHN 4:18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

WE ARE ALL STILL BEING PERFECTED IN HIS LOVE

FEAR IS CHOOSING TO BELIEVE THE LIE OF THE ENEMY

INSTEAD OF THE TRUTH OF GOD’S WORD

YOU CAN BE LOVED - BECAUSE CHRIST CHOSE TO LOVE YOU

I JOHN 4:19 We love because he first loved us.

YOU CAN BE POWERFUL - IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD (I TIM 1:7)

Mark 8:27-9:1
27 Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.”
29 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”
Peter replied, “You are the Messiah.”
30 But Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
31 Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead.
32 As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.
33 Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”
34 Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.
35 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.
36 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
37 Is anything worth more than your soul?
38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
9 Jesus went on to say, “I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God arrive in great power!”

I CORINTHIANS 13:1-8; 13  If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing.  3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. 4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud  5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. 8 Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever!

13 Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

JESUS - PREACHING LOVE FOR GOD AND MANKIND

MATTHEW 22:36-39  “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” 37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’  38 This is the first and greatest commandment.  39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

THE ARRIVAL III

THE ARRIVAL III - JOY

ISAIAH 35:1-10 Even the wilderness and desert will be glad in those days. The wasteland will rejoice and blossom with spring crocuses. 2 Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers and singing and joy! The deserts will become as green as the mountains of Lebanon, as lovely as Mount Carmel or the plain of Sharon. There the Lord will display his glory, the splendor of our God. 3 With this news, strengthen those who have tired hands, and encourage those who have weak knees. 4 Say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy your enemies. He is coming to save you.” 5 And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind and unplug the ears of the deaf. 6 The lame will leap like a deer, and those who cannot speak will sing for joy! Springs will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams will water the wasteland. 7 The parched ground will become a pool, and springs of water will satisfy the thirsty land. Marsh grass and reeds and rushes will flourish where desert jackals once lived.    8 And a great road will go through that once deserted land. It will be named the Highway of Holiness. Evil-minded people will never travel on it. It will be only for those who walk in God’s ways; fools will never walk there. 9 Lions will not lurk along its course, nor any other ferocious beasts. There will be no other dangers. Only the redeemed will walk on it. 10 Those who have been ransomed by the Lord will return. They will enter Jerusalem singing, crowned with everlasting joy. Sorrow and mourning will disappear, and they will be filled with joy and gladness.

LIGHT BRINGS HEALTH

LIGHT BRINGS WARMTH

LIGHT BRINGS DIRECTION

PSALM 119:105 Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

WHEN JESUS IS REVEALED IN OUR HEARTS WE CAN SING WITH JOY LIKE MARY IN LUKE 1

LUKE 1:46-55 46 Mary responded, “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. 47 How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! 48 For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed. 49 For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me.             50 He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him. 51 His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones. 52 He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands. 54 He has helped his servant Israel and remembered to be merciful. 55 For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever.”

Her willingness to REJOICE or FIND JOY in this complicated situation is why we see the angel speak of her in LUKE 1:28 “highly favored”

YOUR PAST IS PREPARATION FOR YOUR PURPOSE

2 Corinthians 4:7-9 We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. 8 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair.  9 We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.

IT’S THE PRESENCE OF JESUS IN YOUR LIFE, THE ADVENT, THE ARRIVAL

THAT SHINES THROUGH THE COMPLICATION AND TESTIFIES OF THE JOY THAT IS AVAILABLE FOR THOSE FOUND IN CHRIST

THE ARRIVAL II

ISAIAH 40:1-5; 9-11

“Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God. 2 “Speak tenderly to Jerusalem. Tell her that her sad days are gone and her sins are pardoned. Yes, the Lord has punished her twice over for all her sins.”

3 Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting, “Clear the way through the wilderness for the Lord! Make a straight highway through the wastelandfor our God!

4 Fill in the valleys, and level the mountains and hills. Straighten the curves, and smooth out the rough places.

5 Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. The Lord has spoken!”

9 O Zion, messenger of good news, shout from the mountaintops! Shout it louder, O Jerusalem. Shout, and do not be afraid. Tell the towns of Judah, “Your God is coming!”

10 Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power. He will rule with a powerful arm. See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.

11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.

No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

15And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him

THE ARRIVAL I

ISAIAH 11:1-5; 10 Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. 2 And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.   3 He will delight in obeying the Lord.He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay. 4 He will give justice to the poor and make fair decisions for the exploited. The earth will shake at the force of his word, and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked. 5 He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment.

10 In that day the heir to David’s throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world. The nations will rally to him, and the land where he lives will be a glorious place.

COME AND BEHOLD HIM - DR. BRIAN SIMMONS

MATTHEW 1:18-23 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. 20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, (LUKE 1) for he will save his people from their sins.”  22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: 23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’”

INCARNATION - The incarnation of Christ is a central Christian doctrine that God became flesh, assumed a human nature, and became a man in the form of Jesus, the Son of God and the second person of the Trinity.

EPHESIANS 2:11a; 12-13 Don’t forget that you Gentiles used to be outsiders. 12 In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope. 13 But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.

COLOSSIANS 1:26-27 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Abundant Thanksgivings

Text: 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 (MSG)  Remember: A stingy planter gets a stingy crop; a lavish planter gets a lavish crop.  7) I want each of you to take plenty of time to think it over, and make up your own mind what you will give.  That will protect you against sob stories and arm-twisting.  God loves it when the giver delights in the giving.

8) God can pour on the blessings in astonishing ways so that you’re ready for anything and everything, more than just ready to do what needs to be done.  9) As one psalmist puts it – “He throws caution to the winds, giving to the needy in reckless abandon.  His right-living, right-giving ways never run out, never wear out.”

10) This most generous God who gives seed to the farmer that becomes bread for your meals is more than extravagant with you.  11) He gives you something you can then give away, which grows into full-formed lives, robust in God, wealthy in every way, so that you can be generous in every way, producing with us great praise to God.

12) Carrying out this social relief work involves far more than helping meet the bare needs of poor Christians.  It also produces abundant and bountiful thanksgivings to God.  13) This relief offering is a prod to live at your very best, showing your gratitude to God by being openly obedient to the plain meaning of the Message of Christ.  You show your gratitude through your generous offerings to your needy brothers and sisters, and really toward everyone.  14) Meanwhile, moved by the extravagance of God in your lives, they’ll respond by praying for you in passionate intercession for whatever you need.  15) Thank God for this gift, his gift.  No language can praise it enough!

I. Giving Is Fun –  When You Know Your Gifts Make a Difference

II. Giving Is Fun –  When You Realize that what You Give Will Be Given Back to You

III. Giving Is Fun –  When You Realize that what You Give Will Multiply

1st Law - If you sow, you will always have a harvest.

Matthew 25:29  To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance.  But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.

2nd Law - You reap the same kind of seed that you sow.

Galatians 6:7-9  Don’t be misled - you cannot mock the justice of God.  You will always harvest what you plant.  8) Those who    live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature.  But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.  9) So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.  At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

3rd Law - You always reap after you sow.

Galatians 6:9  So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.  At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

James 5:7-8  See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm.

4th Law - You always reap in proportion to what you sow.

2 Corinthians 9:6  Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

5th Law - We always reap more than we sow

2 Corinthians 9:10 Now God who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your supply of seed and will cause the harvest of your righteousness to grow.

Proverbs 3:9-10  Honor the Lord from your wealth and from the first fruits of all your crops;  10) then your barns will be filled completely, and your vats will overflow with new wine.

Malachi 3:10-10  “Bring the entire tithe into the storehouse so that there may be food in my temple.  Test me in this matter,” says the Lord who rules over all, “to see if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until there is no room for it all.”

Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you.  A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.

6th Law - You may sow secretly, but the harvest is seen by all.

Matthew 6:3-4 (AMP) But when you give to charity, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,  4) So that your deeds of charity may be in secret; and your Father Who sees in secret will reward you openly.

7th  Law - You are responsible to sow; God is responsible for the harvest.

Mark 4:26-29  He also said, “The kingdom of God is like someone who spreads seed on the ground.  27) He goes to sleep and gets up, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.  28) By itself the soil produces a crop, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head.  29) And when the grain is ripe, he sends in the sickle because the harvest has come.”

Deuteronomy 15:10  Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand       to.

2 CORINTHIANS 11:23-27 I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again.  24 Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea. 26 I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not. 27 I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.

FAITH & FAMILY V

I CORINTHIANS 9:24 Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!

HOW DO WE WIN?
NOT EASY, BUT IT IS SIMPLE

FORWARD
    RACES AREN’T RUN IN REVERSE

PHILIPPIANS 3:12-14 (but I focus on this one thing:) Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

“YOU GOT TO PUT YOUR BEHIND IN YOUR PAST”

HOW DO WE KEEP MOVING FORWARD?

FAITH
HEBREWS 12:1-2a Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS

FINISH
2 TIMOTHY 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. 8 And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.

MOVE FORWARD, KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS, AND FINISH WELL

PHILIPPIANS 1:6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

THE FACT YOU ARE STILL PRESENT, DESPITE YOUR PAST, IS PROOF THAT GOD IS NOT FINISHED WITH YOUR LIFE

FAITH & FAMILY IV

ROMANS 8:31b-39 If God is for us, who can ever be against us?  32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?  33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. 35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?  36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”)  37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.  39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I CORINTHIANS 3:19b-23 For everything belongs to you— 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Peter, or the world, or life and death, or the present and the future. Everything belongs to you,  23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

HEBREWS 11:1-3; 6, “What then is faith? It is what gives assurance to our hopes; it is what gives us conviction about things we can’t see. 2 It is what the men and women of old were famous for. 3 It is by faith that we understand that the worlds were formed by God’s word; in other words, that the visible world was not made from things that can be seen.”

6 “And without faith it’s impossible to please God; for those who come to worship God must believe that he really does exist, and that he rewards those who seek him.”

A MEASURE OF FAITH, TO ACCOMPLISH OUR PURPOSE

Purpose - Using your gifts to serve by serving others -                                                                  You can serve yourself, but that’s not your purpose

HEBREWS 11:6 “And without faith it’s impossible to please God; for those who come to worship God must believe that he really does exist, and that he rewards those who seek him.”

JAMES 2:17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Faith is LINKED to Serving

HEBREWS 12:2-3 We must look ahead, to Jesus. He is the one who carved out the path for faith, and he’s the one who brought it to completion. He knew that there was joy spread out and waiting for him. That’s why he endured the cross, making light of its shame, and has now taken his seat at the right hand of God’s throne.

3 He put up with enormous opposition from sinners. Weigh up in your minds just how severe it was; then you won’t find yourselves getting weary and worn out.”

I PETER 3:1-7 In the same way, let me say a word to the women. You should be subject to your husbands, so that if there should be some who disobey the word, they may be won, with a word, through the behavior of their wives, 2 as they notice you conducting yourselves with reverence and purity. 3 The beautyyou should strive for ought not to be the external sort — elaborate hairdressing, gold trinkets, fine clothes! 4 Rather, true beauty is the secret beauty of the heart, of a sincere, gentle, and quiet spirit. That is very precious to God. 5 That is how the holy women of old, who hoped in God, used to make themselves beautiful in submission to their husbands.         6 Take Sarah, for instance, who obeyed Abraham and called him ‘master’. You are her children if you do good and have no fear of intimidation.  7 You men, in the same way, think out how to live with your wives. Yes, they are physically weaker than you, but they deserve full respect. They are heirs of the grace of life, just the same as you. That way nothing will obstruct your prayers.

If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?  3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.  4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.
