THE ARRIVAL II

ISAIAH 40:1-5; 9-11

“Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God. 2 “Speak tenderly to Jerusalem. Tell her that her sad days are gone and her sins are pardoned. Yes, the Lord has punished her twice over for all her sins.”

3 Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting, “Clear the way through the wilderness for the Lord! Make a straight highway through the wastelandfor our God!

4 Fill in the valleys, and level the mountains and hills. Straighten the curves, and smooth out the rough places.

5 Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. The Lord has spoken!”

9 O Zion, messenger of good news, shout from the mountaintops! Shout it louder, O Jerusalem. Shout, and do not be afraid. Tell the towns of Judah, “Your God is coming!”

10 Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power. He will rule with a powerful arm. See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.

11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.

2 PETER 8:8-9; 15 But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. 9 The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

15And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him

THE ARRIVAL I

ISAIAH 11:1-5; 10 Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. 2 And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.   3 He will delight in obeying the Lord.He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay. 4 He will give justice to the poor and make fair decisions for the exploited. The earth will shake at the force of his word, and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked. 5 He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment.

10 In that day the heir to David’s throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world. The nations will rally to him, and the land where he lives will be a glorious place.

COME AND BEHOLD HIM - DR. BRIAN SIMMONS

MATTHEW 1:18-23 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. 20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, (LUKE 1) for he will save his people from their sins.”  22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: 23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’”

JESUS - SALVATION RESTORATION & DELIVERANCE

IMMANUEL - GOD WITH US; GOD BECAME ONE OF US

ISAIAH 7:14 Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).

INCARNATION - The incarnation of Christ is a central Christian doctrine that God became flesh, assumed a human nature, and became a man in the form of Jesus, the Son of God and the second person of the Trinity.

EPHESIANS 2:11a; 12-13 Don’t forget that you Gentiles used to be outsiders. 12 In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope. 13 But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.

Abundant Thanksgivings

Text: 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 (MSG)  Remember: A stingy planter gets a stingy crop; a lavish planter gets a lavish crop.  7) I want each of you to take plenty of time to think it over, and make up your own mind what you will give.  That will protect you against sob stories and arm-twisting.  God loves it when the giver delights in the giving.

8) God can pour on the blessings in astonishing ways so that you’re ready for anything and everything, more than just ready to do what needs to be done.  9) As one psalmist puts it – “He throws caution to the winds, giving to the needy in reckless abandon.  His right-living, right-giving ways never run out, never wear out.”

10) This most generous God who gives seed to the farmer that becomes bread for your meals is more than extravagant with you.  11) He gives you something you can then give away, which grows into full-formed lives, robust in God, wealthy in every way, so that you can be generous in every way, producing with us great praise to God.

12) Carrying out this social relief work involves far more than helping meet the bare needs of poor Christians.  It also produces abundant and bountiful thanksgivings to God.  13) This relief offering is a prod to live at your very best, showing your gratitude to God by being openly obedient to the plain meaning of the Message of Christ.  You show your gratitude through your generous offerings to your needy brothers and sisters, and really toward everyone.  14) Meanwhile, moved by the extravagance of God in your lives, they’ll respond by praying for you in passionate intercession for whatever you need.  15) Thank God for this gift, his gift.  No language can praise it enough!

I. Giving Is Fun –  When You Know Your Gifts Make a Difference

II. Giving Is Fun –  When You Realize that what You Give Will Be Given Back to You

III. Giving Is Fun –  When You Realize that what You Give Will Multiply

1st Law - If you sow, you will always have a harvest.

Matthew 25:29  To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance.  But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.

2nd Law - You reap the same kind of seed that you sow.

Galatians 6:7-9  Don’t be misled - you cannot mock the justice of God.  You will always harvest what you plant.  8) Those who    live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature.  But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.  9) So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.  At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

3rd Law - You always reap after you sow.

Galatians 6:9  So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.  At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

James 5:7-8  See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm.

4th Law - You always reap in proportion to what you sow.

2 Corinthians 9:6  Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

5th Law - We always reap more than we sow

2 Corinthians 9:10 Now God who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your supply of seed and will cause the harvest of your righteousness to grow.

Proverbs 3:9-10  Honor the Lord from your wealth and from the first fruits of all your crops;  10) then your barns will be filled completely, and your vats will overflow with new wine.

Malachi 3:10-10  “Bring the entire tithe into the storehouse so that there may be food in my temple.  Test me in this matter,” says the Lord who rules over all, “to see if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until there is no room for it all.”

Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you.  A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.

6th Law - You may sow secretly, but the harvest is seen by all.

Matthew 6:3-4 (AMP) But when you give to charity, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,  4) So that your deeds of charity may be in secret; and your Father Who sees in secret will reward you openly.

7th  Law - You are responsible to sow; God is responsible for the harvest.

Mark 4:26-29  He also said, “The kingdom of God is like someone who spreads seed on the ground.  27) He goes to sleep and gets up, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.  28) By itself the soil produces a crop, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head.  29) And when the grain is ripe, he sends in the sickle because the harvest has come.”

Deuteronomy 15:10  Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand       to.

2 CORINTHIANS 11:23-27 I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again.  24 Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea. 26 I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not. 27 I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.

FAITH & FAMILY V

I CORINTHIANS 9:24 Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!

HOW DO WE WIN?
NOT EASY, BUT IT IS SIMPLE

FORWARD
    RACES AREN’T RUN IN REVERSE

PHILIPPIANS 3:12-14 (but I focus on this one thing:) Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

“YOU GOT TO PUT YOUR BEHIND IN YOUR PAST”

HOW DO WE KEEP MOVING FORWARD?

FAITH
HEBREWS 12:1-2a Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS

FINISH
2 TIMOTHY 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. 8 And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.

MOVE FORWARD, KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS, AND FINISH WELL

PHILIPPIANS 1:6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

THE FACT YOU ARE STILL PRESENT, DESPITE YOUR PAST, IS PROOF THAT GOD IS NOT FINISHED WITH YOUR LIFE

FAITH & FAMILY IV

ROMANS 8:31b-39 If God is for us, who can ever be against us?  32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?  33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. 35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?  36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”)  37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.  39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I CORINTHIANS 3:19b-23 For everything belongs to you— 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Peter, or the world, or life and death, or the present and the future. Everything belongs to you,  23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

Purpose - Using your gifts to serve by serving others -                                                                  You can serve yourself, but that’s not your purpose

HEBREWS 11:6 “And without faith it’s impossible to please God; for those who come to worship God must believe that he really does exist, and that he rewards those who seek him.”

JAMES 2:17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Faith is LINKED to Serving

HEBREWS 12:2-3 We must look ahead, to Jesus. He is the one who carved out the path for faith, and he’s the one who brought it to completion. He knew that there was joy spread out and waiting for him. That’s why he endured the cross, making light of its shame, and has now taken his seat at the right hand of God’s throne.

I PETER 3:1-7 In the same way, let me say a word to the women. You should be subject to your husbands, so that if there should be some who disobey the word, they may be won, with a word, through the behavior of their wives, 2 as they notice you conducting yourselves with reverence and purity. 3 The beautyyou should strive for ought not to be the external sort — elaborate hairdressing, gold trinkets, fine clothes! 4 Rather, true beauty is the secret beauty of the heart, of a sincere, gentle, and quiet spirit. That is very precious to God. 5 That is how the holy women of old, who hoped in God, used to make themselves beautiful in submission to their husbands.         6 Take Sarah, for instance, who obeyed Abraham and called him ‘master’. You are her children if you do good and have no fear of intimidation.  7 You men, in the same way, think out how to live with your wives. Yes, they are physically weaker than you, but they deserve full respect. They are heirs of the grace of life, just the same as you. That way nothing will obstruct your prayers.

VISION & VALUES II

VISION & VALUES II 2017

JOHN 1:1-9

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was with God in the beginning.

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.

8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

MATT 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.

16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

TO HAVE THE GOOD LIFE, WE MUST LIVE A GODLY LIFE

***WHERE YOU BUILD IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU BUILD ON IT***

WE OFTEN BUILD OUT OF WANT INSTEAD OF WISDOM

Proverbs 24:3-6 (MSG)

3-4 It takes wisdom to build a house,

    and understanding to set it on a firm foundation;

It takes knowledge to furnish its rooms

with fine furniture and beautiful draperies.

5-6 It’s better to be wise than strong;

    intelligence outranks muscle any day.

Strategic planning is the key to warfare;

to win, you need a lot of good counsel

PROVERBS 4:7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

***WHERE YOU BUILD IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU BUILD ON IT***

***WHAT YOU BUILD IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHERE YOU BUILD***

 I CORINTHIANS 3:10-15

According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it.

11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

12 Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,

13 each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work.

14 If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward.

15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

CHRIST IS THE FOUNDATION, EVERYTHING ELSE IS JUST SAND.

8-12 Summing up: Be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, be humble. That goes for all of you, no exceptions. No retaliation. No sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless—that’s your job, to bless. You’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing.

Whoever wants to embrace life and see the day fill up with good,

Here’s what you do:Say nothing evil or hurtful; Snub evil and cultivate good;

But he turns his back on those who do evil things.

JAMES 1:19 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

(MSG) Post this at all the intersections, dear friends: Lead with your ears, follow up with your tongue, and let anger straggle along in the rear. God’s righteousness doesn’t grow from human anger. So throw all spoiled virtue and cancerous evil in the garbage.

I PETER 3:8-12 Summing up: Be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, be humble. That goes for all of you, no exceptions. No retaliation. No sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless—that’s your job, to bless. You’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing.

THE GOOD LIFE ISN’T ABOUT BEING BLESSED, IT’S ABOUT BEING A BLESSING

I PETER 3:8-12

Whoever wants to embrace life and see the day fill up with good,

Here’s what you do: Say nothing evil or hurtful; Snub evil and cultivate good;

THE GOOD LIFE ISN’T ABOUT BEING BLESSED, IT’S ABOUT BEING A BLESSING

13-18 If with heart and soul you’re doing good, do you think you can be stopped? Even if you suffer for it, you’re still better off. Don’t give the opposition a second thought. Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy. Keep a clear conscience before God so that when people throw mud at you, none of it will stick. They’ll end up realizing that they’re the ones who need a bath. It’s better to suffer for doing good, if that’s what God wants, than to be punished for doing bad. That’s what Christ did definitively: suffered because of others’ sins, the Righteous One for the unrighteous ones. He went through it all—was put to death and then made alive—to bring us to God.

THE LENS

2 Kings 6:13-18 “Go and find out where he is,” the king commanded, “so I can send troops to seize him.” And the report came back: “Elisha is at Dothan” So one night the king of Aram sent a great army with Many Chariots and horses to surround the city. When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha. “Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him, “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” Then Elisha prayed, “O lord, open his eyes and let him see!” The Lord opened the young man’s eyes and when he looked up he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with Horses and chariots of fires. As the Aramean army advanced toward him, Elisha prayed, “O Lord, please make them blind.” So the Lord struck them with blindness as Elisha had asked

Pastor J Preached "POSITION DETERMINES OUR PERSPECTIVE"

The closer you are to the presence of God the more your eyes will be opened to the things of God.

Matthew 6:33

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need

If he had not positioned himself to receive he would have remained in fear

Elisha's Perspective was not on the Army surrounding him but the God backing him

2 Corinthians 10: 3-5 For though we live in the world, we do not wage ware as e world does. (Isn't this exactly our passage Elisha lived in this world, but his war was heavenly.) The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Fear Sells you basic but Faith gives you the upgrade- PASTOR JEREMY

NO MATTER WHAT LIFE LOOKS LIKE, WHEN I SEE THROUGH THE RIGHT LENS OF CHRIST, I WIN

Position Determines Perspective - PASTOR JEREMY BURK

Proper Perspective Inspires Persistent Peace

Perspective:

  • Noun
  • 1. the art of drawing solid objects so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth, and position in relation to each other when viewed from a particular point.
  • 2. a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.

Origin of Perspective:

  • late Middle English (in the sense ‘optics’): from medieval Latin perspectiva (ars ) ‘science of optics,’ from perspect- ‘looked at closely,’

Victory is guaranteed in Christ. Peace on the road to victory is a pursuit

FAITH KNOWS WHAT FEAR CAN’T SEE

John 16:13 When the Spirit of Truth Comes, he will guide you into all truth, he will not speak his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

WE CAN BE HAPPY WITH BEING UNHAPPY OR WE CAN PURSUE PEACE

Synonyms of Perspective are: Outlook, View, Viewpoint, Point of View, approach, Frame of Mind, Mind Set

Romans 8:5-6 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death but the mind goverened by the spirit is life and peace

Perspective that leads to peace is knowing you have the promise even when you cannot see it while you follow Jesus - That's Faith

Romans 8:35-37 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry,or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we arebeing slaughtered like sheep.”[a]) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours throughChrist, who loved us.

Philipians 4:4-8 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

"I can’t afford to live in reaction to darkness. If I do, darkness has had a role in setting the agenda for my life. The devil is not worthy of such influence, even in the negative. Jesus lived in response to the Father. I must learn to do the same." BILL JOHNSON

THE GOOD LIFE II

THE GOOD LIFE II
RUTH 2
It so happened that Naomi had a relative by marriage, a man prominent and rich, connected with Elimelech’s family. His name was Boaz.
2 One day Ruth, the Moabite foreigner, said to Naomi, “I’m going to work; I’m going out to glean among the sheaves, following after some harvester who will treat me kindly.”
Naomi said, “Go ahead, dear daughter.”
3-4 And so she set out. She went and started gleaning in a field, following in the wake of the harvesters. Eventually she ended up in the part of the field owned by Boaz, her father-in-law Elimelech’s relative. A little later Boaz came out from Bethlehem, greeting his harvesters, “God be with you!” They replied, “And God bless you!”
5 Boaz asked his young servant who was foreman over the farm hands, “Who is this young woman? Where did she come from?”

11-12 “I’ve heard all about you—heard about the way you treated your mother-in-law after the death of her husband, and how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth and have come to live among a bunch of total strangers. God reward you well for what you’ve done—and with a generous bonus besides from God, to whom you’ve come seeking protection under his wings.”

19 Naomi asked her, “So where did you glean today? Whose field? God bless whoever it was who took such good care of you!”
Ruth told her mother-in-law, “The man with whom I worked today? His name is Boaz.”
20 Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “Why, God bless that man! God hasn’t quite walked out on us after all! He still loves us, in bad times as well as good!”
Naomi went on, “That man, Ruth, is one of our circle of covenant redeemers, a close relative of ours!”

RUTH 3:1-2 One day her mother-in-law Naomi said to Ruth, “My dear daughter, isn’t it about time I arranged a good home for you so you can have a happy life? And isn’t Boaz our close relative, the one with whose young women you’ve been working? Maybe it’s time to make our move. Tonight is the night of Boaz’s barley harvest at the threshing floor.

3-4 (con’t) But don’t let him know you’re there until the party is well under way and he’s had plenty of food and drink. When you see him slipping off to sleep, watch where he lies down and then go there. Lie at his feet to let him know that you are available to him for marriage. Then wait and see what he says. He’ll tell you what to do.”
5 Ruth said, “If you say so, I’ll do it, just as you’ve told me.”
6 She went down to the threshing floor and put her mother-in-law’s plan into action

RUTH 3:16-17 When she came to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, “And how did things go, my dear daughter?” Ruth told her everything that the man had done for her, adding, “And he gave me all this barley besides—six quarts! He told me, ‘You can’t go back empty-handed to your mother-in-law!’”

THE GOOD LIFE

Ruth 1

1-2 Once upon a time—it was back in the days when judges led Israel— there was a famine in the land. A man from Bethlehem in Judah left home to live in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons.

3-5 Elimelech died and Naomi was left, she and her two sons. The sons took Moabite wives; the name of the first was Orpah, the second Ruth. They lived there in Moab for the next ten years. But then the two brothers, died. Now the woman was left without either her young men or her husband.

6-7 One day she got herself together, she and her two daughters-in-law, to leave the country of Moab and set out for home; she had heard that God had been pleased to visit his people and give them food. And so she started out from the place she had been living, she and her two daughters-in-law with her, on the road back to the land of Judah.

8-9 After a short while on the road, Naomi told her two daughters-in-law, “Go back. Go home and live with your mothers. And may God treat you as graciously as you treated your deceased husbands and me. May God give each of you a new home and a new husband!” She kissed them and they cried openly.

10 They said, “No, we’re going on with you to your people.”

11-13 But Naomi was firm: “Go back, my dear daughters. Why would you come with me? Do you suppose I still have sons in my womb who can become your future husbands? Go back, dear daughters—on your way, please! I’m too old to get a husband. Why, even if I said, ‘There’s still hope!’ and this very night got a man and had sons, can you imagine being satisfied to wait until they were grown? Would you wait that long to get married again? No, dear daughters; this is a bitter pill for me to swallow—more bitter for me than for you. God has dealt me a hard blow.”

14 Again they cried openly. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye; but Ruth embraced her and held on.

15 Naomi said, “Look, your sister-in-law is going back home to live with her own people and gods; go with her.”

16-17 But Ruth said, “Don’t force me to leave you; don’t make me go home. Where you go, I go; and where you live, I’ll live. Your people are my people, your God is my god; where you die, I’ll die, and that’s where I’ll be buried, so help me God—not even death itself is going to come between us!”

22 And so Naomi was back, and Ruth the foreigner with her, back from the country of Moab. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
